Is a Burning Smell Dangerous?
Switch the machine off immediately and unplug it. Do not use it again until the cause has been identified.
Common Causes
Fluff Buildup Near the Heating Element
Lint that escapes the filter can accumulate near the element and scorch. Clean the filter after every cycle and have the machine professionally serviced annually.
Drive Belt Overheating
A slipping or deteriorating drive belt generates friction heat and a rubber burning smell. Belt replacement cost: £80–£130.
Motor Overheating
Overloading or worn bearings can cause the motor to overheat. Unplug immediately.
Electrical Fault
A sharp electrical smell indicates a wiring or component fault — the most serious cause. Do not use the machine until inspected.
What to Do
Unplug, clean the filter, check the vent hose. If the smell persists, call an engineer. Get an urgent tumble dryer repair quote.
