Why Is My Tumble Dryer Cutting Out?
Modern tumble dryers have thermal cut-out (TCO) devices that shut the machine down if it gets too hot. This is a safety feature — ignoring it risks a fire.
Common Causes
Blocked Lint Filter
The most common cause. Clean the filter after every cycle. A blocked filter restricts airflow and causes the machine to overheat within minutes.
Blocked or Kinked Vent Hose (Vented Models)
The vent hose must have a clear path to the outside. Check for kinks, blockages, or a bird nest in the external vent.
Blocked Condenser Unit (Condenser Models)
The condenser collects moisture. If blocked with fluff it restricts airflow and causes overheating. Clean it monthly.
Thermostat or Thermal Fuse Fault
If the above are clear and the machine still cuts out, the thermostat or TCO has likely failed. Replacement: £70–£120.
