Why Will My Tumble Dryer Not Start?
Door Switch Fault
The door safety switch prevents the dryer from running with the door open. A faulty switch will stop the machine starting even when the door is properly closed. Replacement cost: £60–£90.
Thermal Cutout (TCO)
The thermal cutout is a one-time safety fuse that blows permanently if the dryer overheats. Once blown, the machine will not start. Clearing the root cause (usually a blocked filter or vent) and replacing the TCO costs £60–£100.
Control Board or Timer Fault
On older dial-controlled machines, the mechanical timer can fail. On modern electronic machines, the PCB can develop faults. Timer replacement: £80–£130. PCB: £120–£220.
Capacitor Failure
A failed motor start capacitor prevents the motor from starting — the machine may hum briefly and cut out. Replacement: £60–£80.
